Chapter Thirty-One

There are many, many things that get mixed up in my head. The incidents that follow are some of those mixed up things. My other self wrote this scene in front of the White House, for dramatic effect, of course. She also wrote that I assassinated the president of the United States, which never happened. Not by my gun, anyway. What precedes this did happen. It didn’t happen the way she wrote it, but it did happen. The closer I get to the point where my other self and my current self collide, the harder it is to remember things. Again, any mistakes or omissions are not the fault of my damaged brain. Jonas and Starch were responsible for making sure I had my facts right, when they could, so blame them. Alright, so I’ll get on with it.

Okay, so, getting to where I need to go—not where I want to go, mind you, if only because I know how all this turns out. Jonas, Starch, Arthur, and I went in the truck, following behind Jonathon, who very reluctantly had Charlotte in the car with him. I told him it was okay to keep a butcher knife beneath his seat, and he said he would drive with her, not that the knife would do him any good, ‘cause I’m sure she’d slaughter him before he could even reach it…if she wanted to.

The stage was in a remote spot, in woods miles outside the city. Charlotte went through a lot of trouble to secure the place. She had her ways, and she definitely knew people. Plenty of people, good and bad, who helped her out. I didn’t ask her who she called upon to get this secluded spot. I didn’t have to ask. I already knew.

The crowd had gathered, and it wasn’t yet noon.

The stage itself, when it came into my view, was larger than I thought it would be, considering the remote location. We were on some guy’s private land, and he’d set up the twenty-by-twenty foot staging area. There were no lights; this was meant to be a daytime use only location. There was a single podium at the very edge and a big cross standing erect behind it. The cross was built for another gathering, that one much more peaceful, and the stage’s owner just never removed it. It was the cross that made me shudder, and the size of the crowd, well, that made me cringe. I’d have to talk to all those people. I hadn’t a clue how to do that.

Someone rested a hand on my shoulder. Still in the car, though I had barely registered the fact, I turned to face Jonas, who knew without being able to read my mind just how nervous I was.

“I told you, it’ll be okay,” he said.

I smiled at him. “Just don’t go anywhere,” I told him.

“I’ll be right behind you, or in front of you, if I need to be.”

I kissed him quickly and took a deep breath.
